Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member of the EDC community and the gear they rely on every day. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
Good looks and ‘cool factor’ aside, Ethan (@carryoride) is never afraid to put his tools to good and hard use. A student and part-timer at an Ace Hardware, Ethan knows his way around tools. Read on to learn how he put together the perfect trio for his daily use, and find out what’s next on his gear radar!
- Knife: Spyderco Paramilitary 3
The PM3 is a perfect folding knife for me. It fits well in the hand, employs high quality blade steel, and the innovative compression lock mechanism is very fidgety. And of course it wouldn’t have been a true Spyderco without a titanium deep-carry clip from Casey over at Lynch Northwest. At just under $100, it was a no-brainer purchase.
- Bottle opener: Koch Tools Culprit OG Ti
Such a cool tool! Justin was amazing to work with and his quality control goes above and beyond. I’m a die-hard titanium fan, so the 3/8th thick blasted ti was an easy pick.
The Culprit comes equipped with a cap lifter, 1/4th hex driver, key dangler, and works great to just spin around your finger absentmindedly. I also threw Justin’s small bronzed ti solo bead to add some extra flare.
- Pry tool: Pharaoh EDC Arrowhead V1 Ti
The pry is definitely the hardest part of my kit to justify carrying, but it kind of fits in when I’m prying stuff open at work or driving flathead screws for at home projects.
Pharaoh is a one-man crew, owned and operated by a super cool dude named TJ. His products are fine tuned to be user-friendly and are incredibly well machined. It feels solid in hand and really hasn’t showed much wear after all the times I’ve used it.
My name’s Ethan. I’m a CA, Bay Area kid in high school and I work at a local Ace hardware part time. In my free time I like to explore new places, meet new people, and geek out over knives!
The gear in my pockets represents the tasks I tackle in my day to day life. There’s definitely a ‘cool factor’, but I’m not afraid to actually use my tools. After all, that’s what they’re made for!
Whether it’s tearing into a bag of soil at work or popping a bottle in the evening, it is always nice to know I have everything I need right in my pockets. A mini toolbox if you will.
I have always loved gadgets and gear, but only in the past three or so years have I truly begun to delve into the world of EDC. I really struck gold with this community. So many nice people and amazing makers! I’m super grateful to be able to bring what’s in my pockets to the greater public eye.
Favorite EDC Tool:
The Koch Tools Culprit OG Ti is my favorite piece of gear, due to it being my most used tool and a great overall conversation piece.
What’s On Your Gear Radar:
WE Knives, Mote. I’ve been lusting after a titanium frame lock flipper for some time now. The sleek, eye-pleasing lines and solid blade steel both contribute to an amazing utilitarian design.
